What Panax ginseng actually is

Two dominate the conversation: Rg1, associated with the more activating, alertness-supporting effects, and Rb1, associated with the calmer, anxiolytic side. Dosage: how much to take

  • Standardised extract: 200–400 mg/day, standardised to roughly 4–5% ginsenosides. Start at 200 mg — in the cognitive trials it frequently beat 400 mg.
  • Whole root powder: 1–2 g/day to approximate the same ginsenoside load. Less precise, and the ginsenoside content of raw powder is highly variable.
  • Red (steamed) vs white ginseng: steaming converts some ginsenosides into more bioavailable forms. Red ginseng extracts are generally the better-characterised choice.
  • Ceiling: there is no evidence that going above 400 mg of standardised extract improves cognitive outcomes.

If a product lists "ginseng" with no species, no extract ratio and no ginsenoside percentage, you cannot dose it — treat the amount on the label as decorative.

Timing

  • For a long work or study block: take it 1 to 2 hours before you start, so it is active through the second half when fatigue normally bites.
  • For general daily use: morning, with breakfast. Consistency matters more than precise timing for the chronic effects.
  • Avoid late evening: it is not a stimulant, but reduced fatigue late in the day can make it harder to wind down.
  • Food: optional. Taking it with food reduces the mild stomach upset some people report.
